Model Competition Award-winning Works Exhibition
Theme “Something Near and Something Far”
August 4 tue – September 13 sun, 2026
Venue: WHAT MUSEUM ARCHI-DEPOT
As part of the exhibition “Corrugated / Coral – Eight Practices to Project Architecture Afar,” this competition sought ideas that rethink the mod-els and use them to express the nature of architecture and perspectives on society, under the theme “Something Near and Something Far.” The judging was conducted by the eight groups of architects currently exhibiting in the exhibition. They comprehensively evaluated the entries, including how well the works embodied the theme, if they offer shift in perspective or reexamination of architecture and society, and the feasibil-ity of the ideas and selected the winning entries from submissions received from both Japan and abroad.

The model is not a self-contained representation, but a temporary state that continuously transforms through translation across different media. This work reveals how new interpretations are layered onto the model through the fluctuations and indeterminacies that emerge in translation.
HIINA NOHARA
Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2022, and moved to the United States in 2023 to pursue a Master of Architecture at SCI-Arc. Her work in SCI-Arc explores the use of a pen plotter with chalk and Sharpies to investigate moments that deviate from predetermined systems and the representations that emerge through processes of translation.
Drew Hart
Currently pursuing a Master of Architecture at SCI-Arc. Originally from Michigan, his work investigates the formal potential of ordinary construction systems, methods, and forms. Through simple rules and constraints, familiar methods of building are worked until they begin to exceed the common expectations carried by the systems themselves.

Five works unfold as a single journey, beginning with a single image of Villa Savoye.
Each reflects a different perspective on the hidden nature of the world. Together, they become an accumulation of intimations, distilled into a single architecture.

The word Mokei (model) consists of two characters, that together mean ""imitate the manner"".
From representation of objects abstracted and scaled down, to creation that involves scaling up and more materialization, this inverted process attempts to explore further potential of models.

I would like to live in a strong and durable house that brings comfort. However, the life around me is more ambiguous and soft, and it does not form a shape. I never know what shape will the abandoned onion in my fridge or the crochet piece in progress take, but they just stay there.
I sometimes try to extend it and sometimes to ravel it out.
I just keep making stitches, as always.

He explores ways to maintain a certain distance from “nature” through artificial objects such as mountain huts, mountain trails, climbing gear, etc. Graduated from School of Architecture, Shibaura Institute of Technology and obtained a master's degree from The University of Tokyo.

Starting from the idea that “folding a sheet of paper 42 times would increase its thickness enough to reach the moon,” two models were created in an attempt to bring the distance to the moon closer to our bodies. The work invites a back-and-forth between the imagination of reaching the moon and physical reality through the experience of folding a large sheet of paper to its limit and a sculpture of the final form that can never be realized.

This work takes a rough 3D model of a city generated from satellite data and depicts the process by which the image of the city, as perceived from a distance, crumbles, peels away, and disappears as one gets closer. It is a work that reexamines the relationship between the “distance” and “proximity” of cities.

Reconnecting the elements depicted in manga panels evenly across a 360-degree sphere instead of confining them to a single scale. Unintended relationships emerge in that space, forming a narrative that is not a linear story, and transcending our physical limitations that prevent us from seeing a world torn apart into fragments all at once.
Born in Aomori Prefecture in 2002. Graduated from the Department of Architecture, Tohoku University. Using manga and drawings as tools for thought, she attempts to give form to human emotions and activities, as well as the inner conflicts that arise as one oscillates between the two, which architecture alone cannot fully address.
8 models, created by the Competition Award winners based on their proposals, are displayed in this Award-winning Exhibition. Also in the Exhibition space visitors can vote to select a work among the total of eight works for the Audience Award “Corrugated / Coral Award” until September 12th. This exhibition creates an opportunity to think about new potential of architecture while exploring diverse thoughts put into the models. We look forward to your visit and voting.

Villa Savoye
